Aluminum oxide is the passivation layer of aluminium. It forms on metals with atmospheric oxygen in a matter of hundreds of picoseconds (or even faster in some cases). The thin, transparent layer is a useful barrier to oxidation and corrosion, and can be enhanced using anodising processes.

Aluminium oxide is the most common form of alumina in industry. Its chemical properties make it an ideal filler for a variety of plastics, and it is used in some types of glass. It is also a catalyst in many industrial reactions, including hydrodesulfurization and some Ziegler-Natta polymerizations.

white aluminium oxide is a high purity, very finely ground product that is made from alumina, which is highly refined and oxidized. The alumina is fused in furnaces at extremely high temperatures to produce the final product.

Its sharp edges and extraordinary hardness, combined with its high bulk density and low porosity, make it an excellent abrasive. It is highly resistant to corrosion and can be used in a variety of applications, including refractories, ceramics shapes, grinding wheels, sandpaper and blasting media.

It is available in a wide range of mesh, grit and powder sizes to meet individual requirements. It is suitable for abrasive blasting, cleaning and polishing. It is also a useful anti-skid aggregate for use in abrasive lapping and sanding. It has very little iron content, making it a safe abrasive for use on sensitive parts. It can be found in a wide variety of bonded abrasives, and is widely used for surface and cylindrical grinding.
