The formula of aluminium oxide is Al2O3. This formula shows that it is made up of two atoms of aluminium and three atoms of oxygen. It is also called alumina or aloxide.

The chemistry of aluminium oxide is important to understand as it is used in many different applications. It is a very common chemical and occurs in nature as various minerals, including bauxite and corundum.

It is an amphoteric metal oxide and can react with either acid or base, depending on the other reactant being used in the process. It is also a fire retardant/smoke suppressant and can be used in the production of refractories.

When dissolved in water it forms a salt. It can be either alumina chloride or aluminium nitrate, both of which are used in the production of aluminium metal and refractory materials.

This material is a very common ingredient in a wide variety of industrial products and also in a variety of household items. It is used in sandpaper, cutting tools and as a filler for ceramic products such as glass and plastics.

Inhalation of this material can cause a variety of respiratory conditions. Inhaled alumina causes pulmonary hyalinosis and alveolar damage. Chronic exposure to the material may lead to alveolar duct fibrosis and pneumomediastinum, lung cancer and bronchiectasis.

It is a very commonly used material for manufacturing and processing aluminum in industries. It is also used as an abrasive and in the production of precious gems such as rubies and sapphires.
