Aluminium Oxide - Chemical Factors
When aluminium is exposed to air it reacts rapidly with atmospheric oxygen. This produces a thin passivation layer containing aluminum oxide a few millimetres thick. This protects the aluminium from further oxidation.

This layer is essential for the corrosion resistance of metallic aluminium, a characteristic exploited in many alloys. Its protection is further enhanced by a process called anodising, which involves the treatment of aluminium with molten nickel to form a chromium and silicon coating.

During this process, aluminium oxide is generated and becomes a by-product, which is then used in the production of other products. It is used as a ceramic oxide for use in a wide variety of industrial applications, particularly as an insulator and catalyst support.

The crystalline phase of aluminium oxide occurs naturally as the mineral corundum, commonly known as a-alumina or alunicum. Corundum is a 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, making it a popular abrasive.

It is also used as an insulator and as a refractory. It is the material of choice for a wide range of applications, including those in aerospace, electrical engineering, chemical and industrial manufacturing.

The crystalline form of aluminium oxide is most often found as the mineral corundum, but it also occurs in other forms. These include emery, sapphire, ruby and amethyst, all of which are gem-quality forms. They owe their characteristic colors to trace impurities, namely traces of chromium.
