The aluminium oxide is almuniium ore is the most common of several aluminium oxides and is the chemical compound with the formula Al2O3. It occurs naturally as the crystalline polymorph corundum, varieties of which form the precious gemstones ruby and sapphire. Alumina, or bauxite ore, is mined and crushed to extract the pure metal aluminium. It is also used as an abrasive and has a high melting point making it useful as a refractory material, for example for the lining of high-temperature appliances like furnaces and crucibles.

Bauxite is a complex mixture of aluminium hydroxide minerals, principally gibbsite (Al(OH)3), boehmite (-AlO(OH)), and diaspore (-AlO(OH)). It also contains quartz, clay minerals and impurities such as iron oxides and hydroxides. The alumina obtained from bauxite is at least 99.5% pure and is typically colorless or white, although off-colors may be due to the presence of other impurities. Alumina refractories and ceramics are hard, strong and resilient and can be made in a wide range of sizes and shapes. Its resistance to corrosion and thermal shock makes it a valuable material for electrical insulators.

It is also used as a catalyst carrier in the manufacture of chemicals. Because it is fairly inert and relatively cheap, alumina is an important filler for many plastics. Other uses include building materials and insulation, cooking utensils (including kitchen foil and food cans), automobiles, electrical cables, mirrors for telescopes and reflectors in road signs, and high-octane fuel.
